Job Posting – Paralegal
Community Legal Services of Ottawa / Services juridiques communautaires d’Ottawa (CLSO) is a community legal clinic, funded by Legal Aid Ontario. We provide legal services for the low-income residents of Ottawa, as well as community development, law reform and legal education initiatives.
We are seeking a paralegal for a permanent position to work on a special project funded by the Department of Justice Canada. The successful candidate will provide legal advice to vulnerable newcomer and immigrant tenants and increase their awareness and knowledge of their rights and legal options when dealing with housing matters.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide summary legal services to tenants, including legal advice and information.
- Ensure that clients’ legal issues, rights, and responsibilities are clearly understood.
- Conduct in-depth legal research, strategize based on findings, and prepare and draft legal documents.
- Identify legal awareness needs in the community and develop appropriate educational programs.
- Organize legal awareness activities, create information materials, and support community groups on legal issues.
- Participate in law reform activities, collaborate with partners, and contribute to the writing of reports.
- Collaborate with the CLSO team, our partners, and other community organizations.
- Participate in file reviews, case conferences, and seek advice when necessary.
- Perform all other tasks assigned according to the needs of the project.
Qualifications and Experience
- Paralegal with Law Society of Ontario license in good standing
- 1 year or more of advocacy experience for vulnerable individuals
- Experience in developing and facilitating workshops and public education and legal information materials.
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice and working for change for vulnerable and marginalized groups
- Strong knowledge of MS Office, familiarity with computer software in general and technology platforms such as Teams and Zoom.
- Capacity to work in French and other languages spoken by our clients is an asset
- Excellent oral and written advocacy skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work collaboratively
- Strong ability to handle multiple priorities in a high-volume environment
- Organized and detail-oriented but also able to see the big picture
- Ability to supervise students
